Nirnaya Getting Women A Place Under The Sun
OUR WORK
Andhra Pradesh Tamil Nadu Orissa Karnataka Jharkhand

As a pilot initiative, Nirnaya responded to a support request from Hubli, Karnataka for vocational training of agricultural women in zari zardosi and kasuti embroidery in three villages of Holtikotti, Byahatti and Kusugal.

Mrs. Wahida Begum who had asked for the support was taken as Nirnaya's program volunteer for carrying out the projects supported by Nirnaya and paid a monthly fellowship. Besides which she was provided with some modest furniture as well as computer and internet facility. She was also keen on starting a Vikasini Girls School in Altafnagar slum, Hubli and this was started along the same lines as the school in Secunderabad. It was launched on August 4, 2005 with 20 girls between the ages of 3 - 4 years.

Nirnaya supported the dress, salaries, schoolroom rent and some minimum furniture as well as teaching material, with Akshaya Patra Foundation supplying the daily mid-day meal. The families’ contribution is footwear for their children. While the area has a homogenous Muslim community, the school has children from other religious communities as well. The mothers of the children are engaged in low wage occupations. The Nirnaya support has continued for second academic year from July 2006 catering to the needs of 50 children totally. The school carries on its activities just as any other mainstream school. The program coordinator Sireesha Elizabeth Soans has teaching experience and the necessary academic qualification which will help the school go forward.

Cutting and Tailoring Unit :

Nirnaya supported a cutting and tailoring training programme for 30 women in Altafnagar, Hubli,Karnataka. It is expected that this training would create job opportunities for the successful candidates in a garment manufacturing unit being set up at Hubli. It remains to be seen as to what the working hours, conditions and carry home of the women will be. Nirnaya constantly has the concern that the women who undergo vocational skill training are not exploited by a third party - the NGO concerned.

The efforts to build up capacities have subsequently been stopped due to lack of transparency and accountability.
