Jeeta works in various parts of Orissa but Nirnaya
supports the Land Development and Bio Farming project
in three gram panchayats of Barkote block of Deogarh
district. The focus groups are primarily Munda and Bhuyan
tribal women. The livelihood soruces for the community
are agriculture for six months and collection of non
timber forest produce for the rest of the six months.
The latter being low paying, most families migrate to
the nearby industrial area in search of work. Jeeta took
up the challenge of mobilizing the community to develop
the land in their areas, create a seed bank of indigenous
seeds in each of the three selected villages and use
non chemical pesticides for their farming purposes thus
regenerating the cultivable land. This will, Jeeta believes,
help reduce migration and enable the farmers to address
the issue of food security. Jeeta also believes that
45 acres of land would have been developed in a span
of three years, three seed banks would be set up and
the food supply would stretch out by an additional month
as a result of this initiative. The entitlements to
the developed land would be given in the names of the
women.
The group’s project goal is to check migration of tribal women in 15 villages through waste land development, promotion of tribal women farmers, land entitlement for 200 women through public hearing and form Gram Panchayat and block level women farmers’ federation.
